Onomondo's network is set up to secure SMS channels by only providing SMS access through the Platform or API.
Most people typically ask for a phone number so they can send an SMS to a device. Onomondo is developed for IoT and as such, we do not allocate phone numbers (MSISDN) to our SIMs. One reason behind this is that having access to a device's phone number can serve as a potential vulnerability exploited by malicious actors seeking unauthorized access to your device. Another reason for not using MSISDN is that it removes a lot of inefficient telecom infrastructure associated with more traditional requirements to call a person on another network.
However, it is definitely still possible to send an SMS to any of your devices using our SIMs using the SMS Console on the Onomondo Platform or with a POST request to our API. Find out how:
Currently, SMS from the device can be received and read when you are logged in on the Onomondo platform and have the SMS Console on a SIM open. For security reasons, if you're not logged in, the content of past text messages will not be displayed. For a more customized solution that would allow you to receive SMS at all times, you would need to set up a webhook. This will send SMSs and other events to a URL endpoint of your choice and enable you to catch SMS when you are not on the platform.
