SIM is offline and Network Logs / Signaling Logs are empty

Make sure that device settings are correct, FPLMN is clear, and test connectivity with AT commands.

Environment

  • Onomondo app:

    • Network Logs

    • Signaling Logs

  • Device: applicable to all

Issue

  • I have inserted the SIM into my device, but I see no activity in Network Logs and/or Signaling Logs.

  • The SIM is offline and I don't see any new Network Logs.

  • The logs are empty.

Solution

  1. Make sure that these device settings are correct:

    1. Bands enabled match bands available.

    2. Correct technologies are enabled on the modem.

  2. Check if NB-IoT is enabled. This technology can cause longer initial attach times in Automatic Selection.

  3. Make sure that there is coverage in the area for at least one of the cellular technologies supported by the modem. Check Onomondo Coverage Page for more information.

  4. Check the FPLMN list on the SIM and clear it if necessary.

Cause

Empty logs suggest that the device is either not actively trying to connect to the network, cannot find any networks in the area, or all local networks have been written onto FPLMN (forbidden) list on the SIM during previous failed attempts.

There could be multiple causes behind this issue. Many of them are the modem failing to even try and attach to a network (FPLMN list is one reason why the modem would not even try and attach in Automatic selection). The aim of the last step to Test Connectivity is to trigger signalling and/or network logs. Following the above steps helps ruling out the most common scenarios.

Finally, monitoring network rejection codes could aid the investigation, as in some rare cases it can be the network rejecting the network registration before any signalling reaches Onomondo's Core.
