How can I steer the connection to a single operator?

Although generally not advised, you can do this in Network Lists or by setting a user-preferred PLMN list on the modem.

Environment

  • Device: applicable toall

  • Network selection mode: manual (AT+COPS=1,...)

  • Onomondo app: Network Lists

Question

  • Would it be better to set the SIM card to use only one operator instead of do it on the router?

  • How can I steer my device's connection to a single operator?

  • Should I configure the device to use one specific operator or use the Network Lists?

Answer

Although generally not advised, you can do this in Network Lists.

  1. Go to Network Lists tab.

  2. Create or edit a list with a single operator selected in the country.

  3. Save the list.

  4. Assign the list to the SIMs.

Warning: Limiting your network lists to a single operator can cause your device to write other local operator onto FPLMN list on the SIM and limit available network coverage significantly.

Workaround

Implement a network preference (PLMN) list on the modem. Consult this with your hardware manufacturer before implementing.

Cause

Onomondo SIMs are non-steered. We do not add PLMN lists to SIMs, which means that we deliver you SIMs without steering built into them thus enabling your devices to choose the best signal in any given area. By giving you access to all possible networks, your devices benefit from the range of all RANs available in an area, including the latest IoT cellular technologies LTE-M and NB-IoT.

We strongly setting the network selection mode to: automatic, avoiding PLMN lists and maximizing the number of networks available per country in Network Lists to avoid issues.
