I see unusual spikes / drops in data usage on a SIM.

This is often related to communication happening in the packet layer between device and server. Use Traffic Monitor to investigate further.

Environment

  • Onomondo app:

    • Individual SIM usage

    • Traffic Monitor

Issue

  • I see unusual spikes / drops in data usage on a SIM.

  • The data usage graph displays abnormal activity.

  • I see inconsistencies in data usage while the device is constantly online.

Solution

  • This is often related to communication happening in the packet layer between device and server.

  • Use Traffic Monitor to investigate further.

Cause

It can be a lot of different reasons. The most common cause for traffic spikes is misalignment of configuration between server and the device. Interrupted communications may result in resetting or failure to initiate TCP/TLS sockets.

Some other reasons that have been identified previously:

  • Firewall issues

  • Poor signal strength resulting in issues establishing TLS

  • Unexpected access through device/SIM (for example a user using a Gateway with a SIM in it to access other Internet services/sites).
