SIM is offline and I see “Not allowed (...): sms_disabled” in the Network Logs

SMS needs to be enabled to let the SIM connect over GSM, even if your device doesn’t use SMS.

Environment

  • Onomondo app:

    • Individual SIM page

  • Device: applicable to all

Issue

The SIM is inserted and configured, but:

  • The SIM remains offline.

  • Network Logs display "Not allowed to use GSM on network (...) reason: sms_disabled".

  • The device fails to attach to the GSM network.

  • The SIM has SMS disabled in the Onomondo App.

Solution

  1. Open the Onomondo app and go to the affected SIM’s page.

  2. Click “Edit” in the top-left corner.

  3. Scroll down and open the “Technologies” section.

  4. Enable SMS by clicking the toggle.

  5. Save your changes.

Cause

To connect over GSM, SMS must be enabled for the SIM in the Onomondo app. This is because GSM access is linked to SMS in the backend, even if the device doesn’t actively use SMS.

Once SMS is enabled:

  • GSM becomes available for the SIM.

  • The device is allowed to connect using GSM services.
