APN is not required for SMS functionality. ​ There should be no issues with SMS delivery, as long as your device has authenticated on the network and registered on GSM services.

APN is an identifier the device sends to the local network's control-plane node (MME in LTE, SGSN in 2G/3G) to establish a packet-switched data connection. The network then resolves it to the actual address of the Onomondo packet gateway (PGW/GGSN) and your device can connect to the Internet.

SMS, on the other hand, is an older technology that runs on the circuit-switched (GSM) side of the network. It does not require your device to have Internet access in order to send or receive SMS.

Simply put, SMS delivery does not depend on APN or packet-switched connectivity. It's handled entirely by the circuit-switched domain's signaling stack.
