How it works, in short
You create an order through the Onomondo eIM API.
The order waits in that eUICC's queue on the eIM.
The device checks in (polls) and collects the order.
The chip verifies that the order really comes from the eIM it trusts, then carries it out.
The chip reports back with a signed result.
Supported operations
The Onomondo eIM supports all profile operations in the current SGP.32 standard, including:
Download a profile
Enable or disable a profile
Delete a profile
List the profiles on a chip
Set or unset a fallback profile
For an enable, the result comes back over the newly enabled profile. If that profile can't connect, the chip can roll back to the previous one. See Fallback and rollback.
⚠️ Caution: If you disable the only working profile, it can leave your device without connectivity.
How do I manage profiles on the Onomondo eIM?
Through the Onomondo eIM API. You create orders, such as enabling or downloading a profile, with an API call, and check their results the same way.
Can Onomondo push a change to a device instantly?
No. SGP.32 works on a pull model: the device has to be on, connected and checking in with the eIM to receive changes. In some cases we may be able to trigger an early check-in, depending on what the chip and firmware support.
How quickly will a change reach my devices?
It depends on how often your devices poll. Each device picks up the change on its next check-in. If you're planning a switch and need it to land faster, shorten the polling interval beforehand.
Can I change profiles across my whole fleet?
Yes. Create an order for each device, and each one picks it up on its next check-in. Devices that are offline receive the change when they reconnect, so expect a fleet-wide change to complete gradually. Use rollback and a fallback profile so any device that can't connect on the new network recovers on its own.
Can I run bulk operations?
Yes, through the API. To change many devices at once, create one order per device and then check which orders have completed. Because every device collects its order on its own next check-in, a bulk change completes gradually rather than all at once. Offline devices pick it up when they reconnect, and some operations take more than one check-in.
Can I schedule operations for a specific time?
Not as a separate feature. An order becomes available as soon as you create it, and each device collects it on its next check-in. To control timing, create the order when you want the change to start, and plan around your devices' polling interval.
What connectivity does a device need?
A data connection that can reach the eIM over HTTPS. If a device has no connectivity (no connection to the Internet), orders wait on the eIM until it next checks in.
Does the IP address change when I enable a new profile?
Yes. A new profile is effectively a new subscription, so network-level details such as the IP address change with it.
Will I see profile changes in the Onomondo platform?
You'll see the result of every change made through our eIM, and for Onomondo profiles, which one is active. Profiles can also change outside our eIM (for example through fallback or another eIM), so we always show the last reported state from the device.
Does SGP.32 help reduce power consumption?
A little, although profile changes are rare, so it's usually not a big factor. Your devices check in on their own schedule, so they can stay asleep instead of waiting to be contacted. The Onomondo eIM can also handle the profile download on the device's behalf, so the device needs only a single connection. If you use an IPAd, you can check in whenever the device is already awake.
