Can we send an SMS to the units to clear the FPLMN lists?

No, unless the modem is set up to interpret such SMS commands and currently registered on the network for GSM services.

Environment

  • Device: applicable to all

  • SIM type: applicable to all

  • SMS

Question

  • Can we use SMS to remotely clear the FPLMN (forbidden network) list on a device?

  • Can I clear the FPLMN list through SMS?

Answer

It depends on:

  • modem's capabilities, and

  • current GSM network registration status.

To clear FPLMN via SMS:

  1. Ensure your modem is capable of interpreting SMS commands.

  2. Ensure that the module is currently registered on the network for GSM services. This is necessary for SMS delivery.

    1. Issue AT+CREG?

    2. Check for "Attached GSM connection" events in the Network Logs on the SIM.

  3. Send the correct command from the SMS Console on the SIM.

Typically, clearing the FPLMN list requires issuing AT commands. SMS commands are not always supported by default in most modem configurations. Consult your modem manufacturer if in doubt.

Cause

FPLMN (forbidden network) lists are stored on the SIM, but managed internally by the modem firmware and cannot be modified over-the-air via SMS unless explicitly designed to do so. Most devices do not support SMS-triggered FPLMN clearing for security and architectural reasons.
