What happens when a SIM reaches its data limit?

Data sessions are terminated as soon as the SIM reaches the set limit.

Environment

  • Onomondo app:

    • individual SIM page

    • data limits

Question

  • What happens when a SIM reaches a data limit?

  • Can the data session continue after a monthly data limit set on a SIM has been crossed?

Answer

Data sessions are terminated as soon as the SIM reaches the set data limit. Every next connection attempt will be rejected, either until:

  • the data limit on the SIM is manually updated, or

  • the current data limit period ends.

Once you adjust the limit, the device should be allowed to reattach to the network upon the next data attach attempt. For more information, see:

Cause

As a data session approaches its configured limit, the PGW (Packet Gateway) increases the frequency of queries to the OCS (Online Charging System - an internal system within the Onomondo Core Network) to check the remaining quota. This means that Onomondo does not wait until the end of the session to stop it.

However, to control signaling overhead, the OCS queries are capped at increments of 100 KB. In practice, a session may exceed the configured data limit by up to approx. 100 KB, plus any additional data transmitted while the quota check is in progress.
