⚠️ "eSIM" can have multiple meanings
People use the term "eSIM" for at least three different things:
Embedded SIM (form factor): a SIM chip soldered onto the device instead of a removable card. The chip can be either a UICC (single profile) or an eUICC (multiple profile) chip.
A downloadable SIM profile (profile): in consumer devices, eSIMs are a package of network credentials, file system and applets that are normally downloaded by scanning a QR-code.
eUICC (architecture): a SIM that can hold several network profiles and switch between them, with profiles provisioned over the air.
This article is about the "eSIM" understood as eUICC architecture. Form factor and architecture are independent. An embedded chip (typically MFF2) can be a plain UICC or an eUICC. The reverse also holds: an eUICC can come in a removable 2FF/3FF/4FF card, which is common in IoT. A removable SIM can also be an "eSIM" in the architectural sense.
