Does Onomondo network support Mobile Terminated (MT) traffic?

In a sense - yes. However, there are some NAT timeout restrictions to consider.

Question

  • Does Onomondo network support Mobile Terminated (MT) traffic?

Answer

Onomondo supports MT-like traffic using NAT hole punching. It’s not “true MT” in a 3GPP-core-initiated sense, but for many use cases, it’s more than sufficient.

  • When a device sends outbound data (MO traffic), Onomondo assigns it a public IP:port via NAT.

  • The external server can reply to that same IP:port — and Onomondo will route it back to the device (MT traffic), even if it's idle.

  • The MT traffic has to occur within the NAT timeout window: 15 minutes.

If you want to test this, see this guide. There are workarounds that can help you overcome the caveats related to the NAT timeout.
